Who Is Najma Akhtar ? Jamia Millia Islamia Vice-Chancellor To Be Conferred With Padma Shri Today

Padma Shri is the fourth highest civilian award in the country. The award ceremony will take place at the Darbar Hall of the Rashtrapati Bhavan today.

Who Is Najma Akhtar: Najma Akhtar, Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) Vice-Chancellor will receive Padma Shri from the President of India Ramnath Kovind on March 21. Padma Shri is the fourth highest civilian award in the country. The award ceremony will take place at the Darbar Hall of the Rashtrapati Bhavan today.

Under her leadership. Prof. Akhtar bagged 6th rank in the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) of the Ministry of Education (MoE). The institution was accredited with A++ by the National Accreditation and Assessment Council (NAAC) under her supervision in December last year. The award will be conferred to Prof Akhtar for her invaluable contribution in the field of literature and education.

  • She was born on November 13, 1953.
  • Professor Najma Akhtar is the first woman vice-chancellor of Jamia Millia Islamia University (JMI). Besides this, she is also the first woman vice-chancellor of any central university in Delhi.
  • She is an academician from the National Institute of Educational Planning and Administration (NIEPA).
  • She holds an MA in Education and an MSc in Botany.
  • She has a Ph.D. in Education from Kurukshetra University on the topic 'A Comparative Study on Conventional & Distance Education System of Higher Education'.
  • She has also led the Department of Educational Administration at NIEPA. She worked for 15 years there.
  • Besides this, she was the Commonwealth Fellow for the University Administration Course at the University of Warwick and Nottingham.
  • She also got training at the International Institute of Educational Planning (IIEP), UNESCO in Paris.
  • At IGNOU, she also led capacity-building courses for many distance educators at the national and international levels.
  • She has also been the visitor’s nominee on the Selection Committee and Executive Committee of universities that include Maulana Azad National Urdu University (MANUU), Hyderabad, Delhi University, Assam University, and JMI.
