Dr. Bushra Ateeq has been selected for the prestigious Sun Pharma Science Foundation Research Award-2021 along with three other scientists for significant contributions made by them in helping the advancement of science.
She has also served for a brief period at All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi as a Research Associate.
Who Is Bushra Ateeq?
Dr Bushra Ateeq is a researcher and Associate Professor at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur specialising in cancer biology and molecular oncology. The major area of her research lies in the exploration of genetic and epigenetic changes. Epigenetic Changes refer to the study of changes in organisms caused by modification of gene expression. Besides, she is researching for the progression by employing novel strategies and approaches in the field.
Bushra Ateeq is an alumnus of Aligarh Muslim University, Uttar Pradesh, where she completed her Ph.D. in Genetics. She started her career as Research Associate at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences(AIIMS), New Delhi, and later joined the Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (CSIR) on the same profile.
Later on she joined Canada's McGill University as a postdoctoral fellow for two years in 2005.

Ateeq joined the University of Michigan firstly as Research Fellow and then continued as Research Investigator. At Michigan University, she was trained in Dr. Arul Chinnaiyan’s group at Michigan Center for Translational Pathology. In her goals for research involved in the field of cancer, she wants to understand the complex molecular events involved in cancer, identify early diagnostic markers, valuable therapeutic targets and decipher signaling events involved in cancer progression.
She joined IIT Kanpur in 2013 and is currently serving as the Associate Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences and Bioengineering.
The official handle of the premier engineering institute IIT Kanpur posted on its social media page about the achievement of Dr. Bushra Ateeq on January 21, 2022. This comes after her selection for Sun Pharma Science Foundation Research Award-2021 in the Medical Sciences- Basic Research category.
The institute also added a description of her research in the post, "She is also focusing on understanding the molecular events that drive cancer metastases and resistance towards chemotherapeutic drugs."
The award by Sun Pharma recognises the significant contributions made by Indian scientists who are helping in the advancement of science.
