The Delhi police on Wednesday arrested five people, including a woman, who were allegedly involved in making fake passports and visas for criminals, including gangster Lawrence Bishnoi’s nephew Sachin Thapan, by using forged documents.
About a month before Punjabi singer and Congress leader Sidhu Moosewala was murdered, Thapan (one of the key conspirators in the Moosewala case) got a passport issued and fled the country, Delhi Police said while announcing the arrest of five people who helped Thapan and some other criminals get passports on fake papers.
Benita Mary Jaiker, deputy commissioner of police (south district) identified the four held for the fraud as Rahul Sarkar, 27, Arjit Kumar, 55, Somnath Prajapat, 33 and Naveen Prajapat, 33. Police did not reveal the name of the fifth suspect, a woman.
“The accused, Rahul Sarkar, used his own residential address in making the fake passport. He also came in touch with co-accused Sidhu Paji alias Arijit Kumar, who had also asked Rahul to get an Indian passport made with a forged ID,” the DCP said, adding that he used to charge ₹1,50,000 for every fake passport.
Jaiker further disclosed how they received a tip-off regarding Sarkar’s movement on July 4. “Acting on the information, we laid a trap near the Saket Metro Station foot overbridge and arrested Sarkar,” she said.
Who is Benita Mary Jaiker?
Jaiker is a 2010-batch officer of AGMUT cadre. Before being appointed as the Deputy Commissioner of Police, South District, Delhi, she was posted in the Seventh Battalion, Delhi Armed Police. Jaiker was a psychologist who quit her profession to join the service. She cracked UPSC in her first attempt with AIR 120.
In March, to mark International Women’s Day, Delhi Police dedicated Defence Colony Police Station to all women officers.
Women officers operated all the departments of Defence Colony Police Station from handling cases to attending calls. Jaiker, while speaking to ANI had told, “We will serve you to the best of our capabilities across all ranks right from the SHO to the beat staff to the division and patrolling staff, PCR will be women. Whether it’s a case, whether it’s a call, whether it’s a complainant, lady staff will handle it today.”
Netflix series Delhi Crime, which was only loosely based on the official case files of the Nirbhaya rape case, had one of the characters based on Jaiker. Neeti Singh (Rasika Dugal) whose character is based on the officer, was an IPS trainee when the incident took place and was stationed with the family at the hospital 24×7. When Jaiker was asked about the character based on her, she simply stated “I am nobody to comment on the show. It is purely a work of art.”
DCP Jaiker confirmed that she was approached by the makers of the show. Though she refused to comment on the show, she says she has “no issues with it.”
