The Bharatiya Janata Party, which was facing protests in the Parliament over price increases and inflation, accused the Congress of "demeaning" President Droupadi Murmu and sought an apology after its leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury dubbed her a "rashtrapatni." According to Union Minister Smriti Irani, Chowdhury used the word with full knowledge that it was offensive and denigrated Murmu and her position.

"Congress is continuously demeaning a tribal woman from a poor family who created history", Irani pointed out to the reporters. Chowdhury, the Congress party's leader in the Lok Sabha, made the statement to the media while his party was protesting various concerns. After the BJP-led NDA chose Murmu as its presidential candidate, Irani said that Congress had been "maliciously" pursuing her. She claimed that its leaders have referred to her as a "puppet" and a "symbol of evil."

Who Is Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury?

Political figure Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury represents Berhampore as a member of parliament and is the leader of the Indian National Congress in the 17th Lok Sabha. After Somendra Nath Mitra passed away, he now serves as the West Bengal Pradesh Congress Committee's president.

During Rajiv Gandhi's tenure as president, Chowdhury joined the Indian National Congress party. He ran for the West Bengal Legislative Assembly in 1991 from the Nabagram constituency. 300 members of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) pursued him throughout the election while its candidate held him captive. With 1,401 votes, Chowdhury was defeated. He was elected from the same district in 1996. Chowdhury received 76,852 votes and defeated the opposition by a margin of about 20,329 votes.

Chowdhury ran for office in the Berhampore constituency in the 1999 Indian general election. He defeated his closest challenger, Revolutionary Socialist Party MP Pramothes Mukherjee, by a margin of 95,391 votes. He was appointed the Murshidabad district's Congress president as a result of his success. He participated in the Committee on Information Technology, the Railway Convention Committee, and the Committee to Review the Rate of Dividend Payable by the Railway Undertaking to the General Revenues between 1999 and 2000. He participated in the Ministry of External Affairs' Consultative Committee between 2000 and 2004. On February 10, 2014, he was elected president of the West Bengal Pradesh Congress.
