A mob in Bardhaman, West Bengal forcibly smeared sindoor on a minor girl’s head with her deceased boyfriend’s hand who was also a minor and died by suicide. This is according to reports.
This shocking incident took place in Bardhaman area of West Bengal, where a mob forced a minor girl to have her head smeared with sindoor (vermillion) from her deceased boyfriend’s hand. This ritual is reportedly practiced in Hindu tradition to mark the marital status of women.
The young couple hailed from different communities and wanted to get married. The girl’s mother objected their union on the matter of their age and this led to a disagreement between the boy and the girl after which he took his life at Kantapukur in Bardhaman.
The local police sent the body of the boy for post-mortem as soon as they were informed.
The relatives and neighbours of the boy in Bardhaman reportedly gathered and physically assaulted the minor girl and her mother blaming that she did nothing to save him despite knowing his intentions. They alleged that the boy had sent him a picture of himself before committing suicide.
They claimed that the girl had the boy’s mother’s contact yet she did not inform his mother about the drastic step he was about to take. The mob dragged the girl forcibly and applied sindoor with the hand of the deceased boy.
The girl’s mother reportedly filed a complaint in the local police station for the physical assault that her minor daughter had to face. The police are said to have started investigating the matter.
