The voting for the West Bengal legislative assembly began in full swing on March 27. This will carry on in eight phases till April 29. The counting of the votes will be held on May 2. West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee is competing against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Mamata Banerjee has called on the opposition to unite against the BJP. She wrote letters addressed to opposition leaders such as Sonia Gandhi, Sharad Pawar, MK Stalin, Tejashwi Yadav, Uddhav Thackeray, Arvind Kejriwal, Naveen Patnaik, and made her suggestion. Banerjee said that she "strongly believes" that the time has come for a "united & effective struggle against BJP's attacks on democracy & Constitution."

"The BJP wants to make it impossible for non-BJP parties to exercise their constitutional rights and freedoms. It wants to dilute the powers of the state governments and downgrade them to mere municipalities. In short, it wants to establish a one-party authoritarian rule in India," she added.

She has also been complaining to the Election Commission, and alleged that the EC is only interested in listening to her arch rival BJP.
