Thalapathy Vijay & Sangeetha Headed For Divorce: All You Need To Know

Vijay, popularly known as Thalapathy, is in the news for personal reasons rather than his films or political work. Sangeetha Sornalingam, his wife of almost 26 years, has reportedly filed for divorce in the family court, alleging that he has been involved in an “adulterous relationship." 

A Marriage That Began Like a Fairytale

Long before marriage, Sangeetha was known as one of Vijay’s most devoted fans. Their story began in the mid-1990s, shortly after the success of Vijay’s early films, when Sangeetha, a Sri Lankan Tamil raised in the United Kingdom, travelled to Chennai to meet the actor. What started as admiration grew into a deep connection with the support of both families.

Their marriage was first formalised outside the country, in the United Kingdom, on the 10th of July, 1998, followed by a joyous Hindu marriage ritual in the city of Chennai on the 25th of August, 1999. Despite the religious differences that existed between them, with Vijay being a Christian and Sangeetha a Hindu, the couple followed tradition and walked the path of life together.

The couple had two children over the course of the following years, a son named Jason Sanjay and a daughter named Divya Saasha. Despite the growing fame of Vijay, Sangeetha led a rather low-profile life as she chose to avoid the spotlight.

In the initial years, the relationship was peaceful, but around 2021, things started taking a turn. According to the legal filing made by Sangeetha, she found out about an affair between her husband, Vijay and a female film actress, which, according to her, has caused her emotional distress. Sangeetha’s divorce case is still pending before the Chengalpattu Family Court, which has fixed the matter for hearing on 20th April, 2026. Meanwhile, Vijay has been busy with his new political venture, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), which was established in 2024 along with other political initiatives.
