US Gym Chain Planet Fitness is embroiled in controversy after a woman's membership was revoked for allegedly taking a photo of a transgender individual shaving in the women's bathroom. The incident, detailed by Patricia Silvia in a viral Facebook video, describes her encounter with what she perceived as a "man with a penis" in the women's restroom. Silvia recounts witnessing the individual shaving, alongside a young girl, approximately twelve years old, visibly disturbed by the situation, igniting intense discussions on matters of privacy, inclusivity, and corporate protocols.
Planet Fitness' Response
Planet Fitness issued a statement reaffirming its commitment to fostering an inclusive environment for all members. McCall Gosselin, the fitness chain's chief corporate affairs officer, said, "As the home of the Judgement Free Zone, Planet Fitness is committed to creating an inclusive environment. Our gender identity non-discrimination policy states that members and guests may use the gym facilities that best align with their sincere, self-reported gender identity. The member who posted on social media violated our mobile device policy that prohibits taking photos of individuals in the locker room, which resulted in their membership being terminated. ”
They also released a document where they stated that they know some members do feel uncomfortable with a transgender using the same bathroom facilities separated by sex, but there is no reason to deny them access to such services. However, Gosselin clarified that the revocation of the woman's membership stemmed from a violation of the gym's mobile device policy, rather than the individual's gender identity.
Public Response and Outrage
The social media users are unhappy with Planet Fitness's response, and many have addressed this as well, while some say that the woman shouldn't have taken a photo. Silvia also clarified by saying that she took a photo because she thought she was in an unsafe environment, and the gym authorities defended a man with a penis rather than the small girl sitting in a corner with a towel wrapped around her. She mentioned that she would be going to the police and complaining about this incident and how it had completely left her shocked.
Silvia also clarified that she does not have any personal issues with the person's gender or identity in any way. “I realize he wants to be a woman; he gets to be a woman. I love him in Christ, he’s a spiritual being having a human experience. He doesn’t like his gender, so he wants to be a woman. But I’m not comfortable with him shaving in my bathroom.”
Another social media account, Libs of Tik Tok, was mentioned on X by posting the video of Patricia, "WOW. Planet Fitness is standing by their decision to allow men in women's locker rooms. Their policies actually allow males in female spaces. They instruct women to just deal with their discomfort and make sure not to misgender the trans person in their locker room." They also added the hashtag Boycott Planet Fitness.
While businesses strive to uphold inclusive policies, instances such as these stresses the need for clearer guidelines and enhanced communication to ensure the comfort and safety of all patrons.
