UP: Groom Tied To Tree For Demanding Dowry, Wedding Called Off
Despite any efforts to cancel the dowry culture, there are still people who demand dowry from the girl's family, often disguised in the name of ensuring a comfortable life for their daughter. While many families give in to such demands under pressure, some of them don't.

Demanding dowry is a criminal offence but still many times, but families often get away with it. At times, it is because they don't demand it openly but happily accept lavish 'gifts' from the girl's family. At other times, they pressurise the girl's family into accepting their demands or else they threaten to dishonour them in society. Such demands should strongly be opposed because relationships are not built on greed, an important lesson recently taught to a groom in Uttar Pradesh by the family of the bride.

The incident reportedly happened on June 14, the day when Amarjeet Verma was supposed to get married in UP's Pratapgarh. The wedding was going fine and the groom's procession arrived at the venue. The families were preparing for jai mala when the groom's friends asked the bride for a selfie.

They repeatedly asked her to wear black goggles and get a picture clicked but the bride didn't comply. The groom's friends allegedly misbehaved with the bride which led to a brawl between the families.

The conflict worsened and the groom also got involved and started making dowry demands in front of the entire family. The bride's family became enraged and tied the groom to a tree nearby as a punishment. The matter reached Mandhata police station and the police arrived to free the groom. The families were then taken to the police station to solve the matter.

The police asked them to reach a settlement but nobody was ready to compromise. The police suggested the groom's side compensate the bride's family for the wedding preparation expenses as the wedding was called off.
