On Saturday, June 6, a groom arrived at his wedding venue to marry a 22-year-old woman along with several baratis. All of whom were allegedly drunk. Initially, the bride and her family members chose to remain silent. But things took an ugly turn right before the 'exchange of garlands' ritual was about to begin. The groom forced his would-be wife to dance and allegedly got angry after she refused. This upset the young bride and she cancelled the wedding. The incident took place in Uttar Pradesh's Pratapgarh district.

Reportedly, her family members held the groom and the baratis captive immediately after this. They demanded that the cash and gifts they had given them be returned.

Police arrives

The groom's family informed the police about the incident and wanted them to convince the bride to tie the knot. They arrived but the bride firmly conveyed that she would not change her mind. "It was the girl's decision to call off the wedding after she saw her groom inebriated and misbehaving with her and her relatives," a police officer was quoted saying. "Both parties later reached a compromise and the groom's family agreed to return the gifts," he added.

This is not the first time

In 2019, a woman from Odisha's Sambalpur district cancelled her wedding after her would-be husband turned up drunk at the ceremony. Both the families tried to convince the bride to change her mind but she made it clear that she would not marry him. Similarly, a woman 23-year-old named Priyanka Tripathi called off her wedding after she caught her prospective groom drunk and trying to pull off the 'naagin dance'. The next day, she got married to another suitable groom. Click here to read more on these incidents.
