The Unnao woman, who had accused MLA Kuldeep Sengar of raping her, was severely injured along with her family members in an accident. According to reports, the vehicle she was travelling in collided with a truck on Sunday, 28th July. The incident took place when the rape survivor was travelling to Rae Baraeli. Reports say she was travelling with her two aunts and lawyer Mahendra Singh.
The rape survivor and her lawyer were admitted to a hospital in a critical condition. Her aunt and another woman relative, who were in the car succumbed to their injuries.
The lawyer is battling for life with head injuries. Times Of India noted in its report that although the survivor and her family were to be accompanied by a guard as way of security, none were present during this journey.
The rape case shot into prominence when the survivor attempted suicide in front of the Chief Minister’s house on April 8, 2018. By doing so, she alleged that the police did not act on her complaint though she had approached them several months earlier. The case was transferred to the CBI after protests broke out.
Few days before this suicide attempt, the survivor’s father was also beaten up allegedly by the MLA’s brother Atul Singh and others in the village as per News18. He was sent to jail on various charges as well as under the Arms Act. On April 8, his condition deteriorated inside Unnao jail and he died in custody.
