Shripad Naik's Wife Vijaya Passes Away In Car Crash, Union Minister Critically Injured

Union Minister Sripad Naik lost his wife and personal secretary in a car crash last night.

Union Minister Shripad Naik suffered multiple injuries after his car met an accident near Hosakambi village in Ankola taluk of Karnataka’s Uttara Kannada district. The minister's wife Vijaya Naik and his personal secretary Deepak Dube have died in the car crash.

68-Year-Old Shripad Naik, who is the Union Minister of State for AYUSH (independent) and defence is now out of danger, confirmed Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant. He is currently being treated at the Goa Medical College and Hospital in Bambolim.

"He is safe and his health is stable. However, Mr Naik would undergo two minor surgeries tonight. Currently, there is no need to shift him to Delhi for treatment", said CMSawant.

Karwar region Additional SP S Badarinath told The Indian Express that the incident occurred between 7.45 pm and 8 pm. Naik had incurred "multiple injuries and he was taken to Bambolim Hospital in Goa on directions of the Goa government for treatment," he added. Badarinath also mentioned that three others present in the car- the personal guard of the minister, the driver as well as a friend of the minister suffered minor injuries.

Photos have surfaced from the spot of the accident showing a white Toyota car in which the minister was travelling in a mangled state among the trees. The car is seen heavily damaged. 

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal tweeted his condolences after Vijaya's death. "Deeply saddened to hear the news of Vijaya Naik Ji's death in an accident," he wrote. He further prayed for the speedy recovery of the Union Minister and wished him strength to overcome his loss.

Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa also expressed his grief on Twitter.
