CBI Takes Over Investigation Of Mentally Challenged Woman's Gangrape In Bengal

CBI takes over the Uluberia gang rape case investigation which was registered at the women police station of the place.

The Central Bureau of Investigation(CBI) has launched an investigation into a case registered at Uluberia Women Police Station at Howrah in West Bengal. The agency had already been looking into many cases of post-poll violence in the state.

As the result of complaints and orders of the High Court of West Bengal, CBI has lodged 51 FIRs in the state.

Uluberia Gangrape Case Of West Bengal:

The FIR lodged by CBI is in connection to an alleged gangrape of a mentally handicapped woman in Uluberia of Howrah district in West Bengal. The incident reportedly took place on August 8, 2021.

The wife of the complainant was alone at home when five men sneaked inside the house, where the woman was allegedly beaten and raped. The family of the survivor tried to lodge a complaint at Uluberia Women's Police Station, but they were allegedly not heeded to. As a result of non-compliance, the rape survivor's husband then complained to CBI regarding it. On the basis of the allegations, CBI took over the case. The team from the central agency will be now investigating the entire matter.

Charges have been registered against the accused under the given sections of Indian Penal Code(IPC)- Section 36 (Effect caused partly by act and partly by omission)Section 325 (punishment for voluntarily causing grievous hurt), Section 448(Punishment for house-trespass) among others.

Actions Taken By CBI-

A total of 51 cases have been registered so far by the CBI on the directions of High Court of West Bengal. Cases against allegations of indecency, rape, murder, attempted rape, gangrape as the result of post poll violence have been registered at many places in the state. As per the CBI sources reported by a media agency, there are fifty FIRs and ten charge sheets. CBI submitted its first status report to the High Court on October 2, 2021 and second one was submitted recently on December 23, 2021.

The post poll violence that reportedly engulfed the state of West Bengal after the announcement of the results of state legislative assembly elections in 2021 took lives of many in the state and did not spare the women and children.
