Coles initially thought it was probably a temporary thing, but six weeks passed, and she couldn’t seem to shake it off. She hadn’t even visited another country. In 2022, she was diagnosed with Functional Neurological Disorder (FND). She had to quit her job in a pub near Bourne due to the accent change.

The BBC reported that Coles thinks that she has developed Foreign Accent Syndrome (FAS), a rare condition that changes the way people speak. Coles had a German accent originally, which later turned into Welsh.

Talking to the BBC, Coles said that there were many people affected by a functional neurological disorder, but this accent syndrome seemed like something had gone wrong in her brain; something wasn’t right because she couldn’t believe how anyone could wake up one day and have a completely different accent. She expressed her desire to work with someone who could help her, and then she wanted to help others who were facing similar situations.

Coles has appealed for medical attention through TikTok as she is concerned that her condition could be linked to a neurological condition that has left her in chronic pain. She shared in her video that she had experienced chronic pain, loss of motor control, and speech problems and was looking for a neurologist or an expert to help her out. She claimed that she had failed to get a referral to a specialist at St. George’s University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

Welsh is a language spoken by a Brittonic subgroup that’s native to Welsh people. It’s spoken natively in Welsh and by some people in England. So, it’s very surprising that a woman, who has never even visited that place, is able to speak with a heavy Welsh accent.
