TT player Mouma Das and five other sportspersons were honoured with the Padma Shri by Ram Nath Kovind, the President of India. They were felicitated on the eve of India's 72nd Republic Day.

Other notable sports players who received the honour included P Anitha, Madhavan Nambiar, Sudha Hari Narayan Singh, Virender Singh, and KY Venkatesh.

The government of India has always kept up with the tradition of bestowing the Padma Awards upon people who have made a mark in the fields of arts, social work, civil services, science & technology, sports, etc. It is the Padma Awards Committee that decides on rewarding persons for their spectacular contributions in their respective fields every year on 25th January. 

Let us take a look at the female sportspersons who have now become the pride of the nation.

Mouma Das

Mouma Das is a table tennis player who has been representing India in International tournaments since the early 2000s. Throughout her career, she has made India proud by winning numerous medals at the Commonwealth Games. She has also played at the Rio Olympics of 2016 and also at the ITTF world tours. Mouma has been the recipient of the Arjuna award in 2013. 

P Anitha

P Anitha is a Basketball player who hails from Chennai, Tamil Nadu. She became the youngest person to serve as the captain of the women's national basketball team. Anitha has won as many as 30 medals and has won many championships too. Among these include the Commonwealth Games and Asian Games. 

Sudha Hari Narayan Singh 

Sudha Singh is an athlete who is from Rae Bareli, Uttar Pradesh. She has been winning many accolades for India since 2005. She garnered praise for her athletic feat at the 2010 Asian Games by earning a gold medal. Over the years, Sudha has managed to win many medals at the Asian Games and has also participated in the 2016 Rio Olympics and the International Amateur Athletics Federation (IAAF) Diamond League, Shanghai. Sudha was conferred with the Arjuna award in 2012.
