Badminton ace Saina Nehwal has always made India proud. From bringing the Olympic medal to being the runners-up at the BWF World Championships, her triumphs only added to India’s glorious achievements. Even though she is fighting a career threatening knee injury, she has returned to the court again, trying to make a successful comeback.

One of the top sportspersons internationally, Nehwal has now been labelled ‘anti-national’  for being the brand ambassador of a Chinese brand. Yes Saina is endorsing Honor, which is a sub-brand of Huawei, a Chinese company.

This just shows how casually we Indians tend to forget those facts.

On Sunday, when the former world number one Nehwal took to Facebook to post a picture on her page with the Honor 8 smartphone to promote the brand, trollers termed it an anti-national act! So easily we Indians convert our love into hatred. And with the herd mentality that people have, others followed suit, slamming her for “shaming” her country!

Why does this happen? As Indians we can use as many foreign products like Uber and wear global brands too, but when a successful sportsperson who has brought home numerous prestigious medals goes out of the way to endorse a foreign product, we question her nationality. Is that fair?
