Three Women Among Nine Justices Taking Oath For The Supreme Court In Delhi

Three Women Justices:  It is a historic moment for India as three women Justices Hima Kohli, BV Nagarathna and Bela M Trivedi took oath among nine new people joining the apex court in Delhi today.

The Supreme Court now has four women judges. Taking the total number of judges to 33, this is the highest ever number of women judges India has had at the apex court at a given time. The Apex Court has so far 11 women judges including the three new appointments. It is also the first time that nine judges have been appointed to the top court in one go. Justice Indira Banerjee was the only woman judge before these appointments.

Justices AS Oka, Vikram Nath, JK Maheshwari, CT Ravikumar, MM Sundresh and PS Narasimha are the other people who joined the court today. The oath was administered by Chief Justice of India NV Ramana in the Supreme Court auditorium premises. The sanctioned strength of the Supreme Court is 34 including the CJI.

Justice Hima Kohli

Justice Hima Kohli has been appointed to the highest court till 2024. In January 2021 she was appointed as the Chief Justice of the Telangana High Court. She was appointed as an Additional Judge of the Delhi High court in 2006.

During her appointment to Telangana High Court she became the only female on the Chief Justice seat across the 25 Indian High Courts.

Justice Hima Kohli is a graduate in law from Campus Law Centre, University of Delhi. In 1984, she got enrolled as an Advocate with the Bar Council of Delhi. She was the Legal Advisor and Standing Counsel in the Delhi HC from 1999 to 2004.

Justice BV Nagarathna

Justice BV Nagarathna is the daughter of former Chief Justice of India ES Venkataramiah. She was part of the Karnataka High Court. And she is in contention to become the first woman Chief Justice of India in 2027. Her father, retired as Chief Justice of India in December 1989.

Justice Nagarathna started as a lawyer in Bengaluru. She was appointed as an additional judge in 2008 and subsequently elevated as a permanent judge of the Karnataka High Court in 2010. Justice Nagarathna is experienced in constitutional law, commercial law, including insurance law, service law, administrative and public law. She also specialises in law pertaining to land and rent laws, family law, conveyancing and drafting of contracts and agreements, arbitration and conciliation.

Justice Bela M Trivedi

Justice Bela M Trivedi is the first woman judge from Gujrat High court to be elevated to Supreme court. She has also served as law secretary to Gujarat government. She will be part of the apex court till June 2025.
