Former Parliamentarian J Jamuna Passes Away At 86

J Jamuna passed away today, she was a veteran Telugu film actor and former parliamentarian. She took her last breath at her residence in Hyderabad after a brief illness due to age-related issues, as per family members. She was 86.

J Jamuna's remains will be taken to the Film Chamber for public homage and the last rites to be performed by the end of the day. 

J Jamuna had a long career as a politician and an actor. She entered the film industry at the age of 16 but was a stage artist since her school days. She entered politics after having a long stint in cinema. In the 1980s, she joined the Congress party and become the president of the Andhra Pradesh Mahila Congress.

J Jamuna was born as Janabai to Nippani Srinivasa Rao and Kowsalya Devi in Hampi on August 30, 1936. She married a professor of zoology at Osmania University, Juluri Ramana Rao who died in 201

She is survived by her son and daughter. Her husband Juluri Ramana Rao, a professor of zoology at Osmania University, died in November 2014. She was survived by her son and daughter.

On the career front, she made her debut in the cinema with Puttillu (1952). She also did theater on behalf of the Indian People’s Theatre Association floated by Raja Rao. She acted in over 198 films in the Telugu language, to name a few- Bhookailas, Gundamma Katha, Chiranjeevulu, Mooga Manasulu, and Ramudu Bheemudu. She played characters from the Indian epics of Ramayana and Mahabharata. Also, did a few films in Hindi, one of the best which also won her Filmfare award was Milan opposite Sunil Dutt. J Jamuna last appeared in Ammammagari Manavadu in 2021.

On the political front, her career was short. She contested the Lok Sabha elections in 1989 and won from the Rajahmundry parliamentary constituency. The second election in 1991 was not a victory, since then she quit politics but campaigned for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the late 1990s. Her next role was as a social worker she did social service for the last 25 years.
