In Telangana, a 22-year-old woman, P Malleshwari, who worked in a private hospital in Mancherial as a cleaner, fell in love with her female roommate, 21-year-old Salluri Anjali. A few months back, Malleshwari confessed her feelings to Salluri. Salluri refused her advances as she was not interested in romantic relations with women. The two remained roommates but one day, Malleshwari came to know that Anjali was dating a man named Srinivas and they have been in a relationship for quite some time. Their relationship made Malleshwari jealous and she called Anjali to the Ramakrishnapuram forest on March 15 with the pretext to discuss about their situation.

In the forest, the two got into an argument after which Malleshwari reportedly slit her throat and stabbed her in the abdomen. She returned home and pretended to be completely unaware of Anjali's whereabouts while the police and her boyfriend searched for her. Recently, police discovered Salluri's body in the forest and on inquiring with the eyewitnesses, they got to know that Malleshwari allegedly killed her. Though she tried to deny it at first, saying that Salluri attacked her and it was just self-defense, she later on confessed and is currently in police custody.

This is just one of the many cases of one-sided love in India that turned into criminal offenses. There have been many times when people have tried to ruin the life of their unrequited love in various sinister ways. Acid attacks, murders, causing a scene at the other person's wedding, putting vermilion on them in their wedding with another person, or harassing her. People think that if a woman refuses to love them, she has wronged them and deserves to be punished which is such a wrong notion as it is simply a matter of choice.

Why is it really hard for people to understand that their feelings cannot be reciprocated every time and that the person is not obligated to love them just because they do? They have their own life and they can make their own choices when it comes to a life partner, just because you love them doesn't mean they need to love you back. Whether it is a man or a woman, nobody has any right to force their love on anyone else or try to harm them for rejecting their love.

However, people think that if a person is being friendly with them or helping them or just being nice to them, that means that they are in love with them. They would argue that if they wanted to reject them, why were they being nice to them? Well, being nice does not particularly mean that they love you. Care and love are often misinterpreted by people which is their problem. Taking grave decisions like harming or harassing them is no valid solution to their feelings.

We need to eradicate this notion from a society that a woman rejecting romantic advances is wrong. Women too have a right on choosing who they love and who they want to spend their life with. They are not obligated to love anyone if they don't want to. Then will these one-sided love stories not have a criminal ending?
