Sarpanch In Telangana Village To Give Rs 10,000 On Birth Of Every Girl Child

In a bid to empower the girl child, a Telangana Sarpanch has promised to offer Rs. 10,000 for the birth of every girl child that takes place in Mariyapuram in the Geesukonda mandal of Warangal district.

Speaking to TOI, he said that he was going to deposit Rs 10,000 on the name of the new born. After attaining adulthood, the fixed deposit amount which would by then rise to Rs. 1 lakh can be utilised for her higher studies or wedding, said the sarpanch. He came up with this plan because families living below poverty line find it hard to deposit Rs. 10,000 and so, they aren't able to avail Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana.

What is Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana?

It is a government-backed small savings scheme that benefits the girl child. A Sukanya Samriddhi account has a tenure of 21 years or until the girl marries after the age of 18.

Besides authorities, individuals are also trying their best to break the taboo surrounding the birth of daughters in our society. 28-year-old Anchal Gupta is a pani puri seller who celebrated the birth of his daughter by distributing Rs.50,000 worth of the spicy snacks among people living there in September. Why did he do so? In an interview with TOI, he said that he wanted to prove that society should treat both boys and girls equally. He didn't like the fact that in place of congratulating him, they told him that she would prove to be a burden on the family.
