Three-time Commonwealth Games gold medallist and former World Shooting Champion, Tejaswini Sawant celebrates her 40th birthday on 12 September 2020. The stellar sportswoman has a myriad of achievements to her credit. She is also slated to make her long-awaited Olympic debut at the Tokyo Olympic Summer Games next year.

Here are a few interesting facts and achievements from Tejaswini’s life and career as a female shooter:

• Born to Naval Officer Ravindra Sawant and Sunita Sawant in Kolhapur, Maharastra, Tejaswini started her shooting training at the age of 13.  Notably, her first shooting coach was Jaisingh Kusale. In her early days, she practised in the Dudhali area of Maharashtra, a place having few to no facilities for a shooter.

• Her first notable achievement was clinching the gold medal at the South Asian Sports Federation Games in 2004.

• Consequently, Tejaswini did wonders at the 2006 Commonwealth Games. She won two gold medals in the 10m air rifle and 10m air rifle pairs categories.

• A true trailblazer, Sawant became the first Indian woman to win gold and become the World Shooting Champion at the World Shooting Championship (2010).

• She also set a record at the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games with a total score of 457.9 in the 50m Rifle 3 Position finals.

• Outside the arena, the Department of Sports has appointed Tejaswini as the OSD-Officer on Special Duty.

• Tejaswini considers her current personal coach Kuheli Gangulee as her biggest support system.

• In 2016, Tejaswini tied the knot with Sameer Darekar, a successful bodybuilder.

• Furthermore, Tejaswini received the prestigious Arjuna Award in 2011 for her victories in the field of shooting.

• In a past interview, the sportswoman expressed her elation at representing her country on a global platform. Also, she described the feeling of fulfilling her father’s dream as magical.
