This case has been reported days after the gang-rape and murder of a 50-year-old woman in Badaun district of Uttar Pradesh made headlines. Reportedly, the middle-aged woman, who was an Anganwadi worker, went to a temple alone in the evening where she was gang-raped and murdered. The temple’s priest has been arrested as the main accused along with two of his disciples. The case further incited a debate on women’s safety in India when NCW member Chandramukhi Devi who went to the district to investigate the case said, ““I think this incident would not have occurred if the woman had not stepped out of her house alone or had she been accompanied by a child of the family.”

According to the NCRB report, the crime against women in India has increased by 7.3 per cent in the year 2019. 84 cases of rape happened every year with one case being reported every 15 to 16 minutes. Uttar Pradesh ranked the highest by recording 14.7 per cent of the total rate of the crime against woman. It also reported a significant number of criminal cases under the POSCO act for the crimes committed against minor girls in the state which was as high as 7,444 cases.
