According to a story by the United Kingdom’s Metro, a 33-year-old English teacher from Italy quit her job to become a professional mermaid. The teacher, Moss Green, who hails from the United Kingdom, shared that her first experience as a mermaid was "exhilarating and exciting." She revealed that wearing a tail in the water helped her "feel more in contact with nature and the sea."

Teacher Quits Job To Become Mermaid

She explained that one day she saw someone dressed up as a magical merman coming out of the water before he dived back inside, and she saw that he had a tail instead of legs. She exclaimed that it was magical to her on a secluded beach, and that was the moment when it became clear to her that she wanted to take up mermaiding as a new hobby.

From being a hobby, it changed to a career as Green received a job offer from an adjacent island, Lampedusa, two years later. She was taught how to hold her breath underwater, dive, and perform tricks, and she turned into a certified mermaid.

She shared that she was able to hold her breath underwater, dive down to a certain distance, spin around, swim facing the sky, and identify the names of different fish. Green claimed that being a professional mermaid paid her less than what she was making as a teacher; however, she said that this choice made her "happier than ever" and that she "had no regrets."

She added that she earned enough to live on and that, at the end of the day, she was doing something that she loved, and that’s all that mattered for now. She also said that while the future remains uncertain, for now, she was getting her feet in the door of the mermaid world and noted that it was an art form that she wasn’t aware was going to pay this much.

During the summer, Green said that she guides boat tours and teaches guests how to swim like aquatic creatures for 12 hours a day. She added that her mother thought it was a crazy line of work and that she would probably do it for a couple of months. However, her mother realised that it wasn’t after she saw the hobby turn into a career over the course of years.
