Specially in the case of events that attract a crowd of hundreds of people, like fares and festivals, the responsibility of ensuring order and discipline becomes even more important as the life of people is on stake. There have been many cases of improper order at such big events that have led to mishaps like during Dussehra mela and Ram-leela. However, the people do not seem to take lesson from these incidents as there have been yet another case of improper management that led to a stampede in Tamil Nadu.

9 Things About Tamil Nadu Saree Distribution Stampede Incident

  1. The free saree distribution event was happening in Vaniyambadi town of Tirruppattur, Tamil Nadu on February 4.
  2. A man was reportedly distributing free sarees and veshtis in a private event on the occasion of Thaipusam festival.
  3. Thaipusam festival is celebrated to mark the birth anniversary of Lord Murugan or Lord Kartikeya, Lord Shiva's younger son. According to the beliefs, on this day, Goddess Parvati ordered her son Lord Kartikeya to kill the demon Tarakasura. This year Thaipusam festival is being observed on February 5.
  4. A long queue was gathered outside the venue where around thousand women waited for their turn to get tokens to receive free saree and veshti.
  5. However, soon the huge crowd got out of control and turned into a stampede creating chaos and many women fainted during in the suffocating venue.
  6. While people splashed water on fainted women, police was informed and injured and fainting people were sent to hospitals immediately.
  7. As per the reports, around 12 injured people are currently in critical condition and are undergoing treatment in government hospital while four women were killed in the incident.
  8. The Vaniyambadi Revenue Commissioner is monitoring the government hospital where the injured are admitted while the police and Revenue Department investigates the incident.
  9. MK Stalin, the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, has announced that the families of people who lost their lives in the stampede will be given a compensation of Rs. 2 lakhs.
