Thunberg and Rihanna's posts on the same have triggered a nationwide controversy in the matter. Several celebrities and public figures, political leaders and activists, including Meena Harris, an American lawyer and the niece of the United States Vice President Kamala Harris, media personality Mia Khalifa, actor Amanda Cerni, singers Jay Sean, Dr Zeus have supported the protesting farmers.
The Indian government has criticised the tweets from Rihanna and other celebs who have caused a massive uproar in the country. "Why aren't we talking about this?!," she had tweeted a news article about internet services being shut down around New Delhi amid the protests. Later, Swedish activist Greta Thunberg also said that she stands with the farmers in India.
After a few Bollywood celebs also tweeted back to back on the issue, the external affairs ministry released a statement saying that certain "vested interest groups" are succeeding in getting "international support against India."
