Mahajan said that her niece refuted the MP on Twitter saying that the former Lok Sabha Speaker was well and healthy. Mahajan questioned Tharoor, "What was the urgency in announcing (the news) without confirmation?" sic.

She also questioned the news channels who aired the news of her (fake) death saying that how could the channels run a report on her so-called death without cross-checking the information with the Indore administration.

On Thursday, April 23 Congress MP Shashi Tharoor courted a controversy after he tweeted about the demise of Mahajan without cross-checking the fact. He was very soon corrected on the matter by Kailash Vijayvargiya, a BJP leader, that The former Lok Sabha Speaker was "hale and healthy".

Tharoor, falling for fake news, tweeted on Thursday that he was saddened to learn about the passing of Sumitra Mahajan, the former Lok Sabha Speaker. He also wrote about his positive interaction with her and the late Sushma Swaraj in the tweet saying that they once asked him to lead a Parliamentary delegation to BRICS in Moscow. He also showed his condolences to Mahajan and her family saying "Om Shanti!"

Tharoor deleted his tweet after realising the mistake and said, "I wonder what motivates people to invent and spread such evil news that takes in people" in a new tweet.

After Tharoor's tweet went viral, many other political leaders like Sharad Pawar and Supriya Sule also tweeted to offer their condolences.

According to reports, the former Lok Sabha Speaker had complained of fever but was tested negative for COVID-19.
