A groundbreaking and successful heart transplant procedure was performed on August 23 by a government-run hospital in Delhi, Atal Bihari Vajpayee Institute of Medical Sciences, and Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital. According to a hospital statement, the procedure was performed on Laxmi Devi, a 32-year-old woman.
A group of cardiac surgeons from RML hospital and AIIMS, led by Dr. Narender Singh Jhajhria, collected the donated heart from PGI Chandigarh on August 22nd evening. With the aid of Alliance Air's airline manager and the assistance of the Delhi and Chandigarh police, plans were then made to carry the donor's heart through the air within two hours, according to Dr. RML Hospital.
The donor, a 15-year-old girl who passed away in a car accident on August 15 and was hospitalised with a severe head injury, was admitted to PGIMER Chandigarh. She was put on the ventilator to save her organs after being declared brain dead on August 20 at 9 am. She helped save six more lives with her organs.
First Successful Heart Transplant In Delhi
According to the hospital's press release, Laxmi Devi had terminal heart failure after giving birth and was experiencing extreme breathlessness that made it difficult for her to perform even simple everyday tasks.

Dr. Vijay Grover said, "The longest surgery was performed on this 32-year-old woman after she had been in pain for 7–8 years, which is now considered normal. When she was a little kid, she was initially given the diagnosis of narrated cardiomyopathy. A 15-year-old vehicle accident victim who gave up her body parts as an organ donor assisted in saving six lives."
Dr. Nandini Duggal, Director, and MS of RML Hospital said, "It's a big achievement and it's a history that has been created by RML doctors here." She added, "It was a very difficult task but thanks to our dedicated teams because a great team effort and departments of CTVS cardiology, blood bank, Nodal officers for transplant, our transplant coordinator, then many other services from Chandigarh, from Delhi airport authorities, AIIMS, all they worked for hand in hand to make this successful"
