During the discussion about the Maharashtra Public University Act, 2016 Bill, which includes LGBTQIA+ community members as University Boards, Mungantiwar opposed such inclusion. He said "Are you going to hire lesbians and gays as members? Shouldn’t a joint medical committee be set up on this? It mentions bisexual and asexual relations. However, no one has yet defined these."

Mungantiwar went ahead and questioned asexual relationships by saying "Asexual relationships. No one has defined it. So if a person has asexual relationships with an animal, will the animal come and certify that there was an asexual relationship? What is going on?"

He further asked the government "Will you appoint homosexuals as members? Will someone write that I am gay, that I am attracted to homosexuality? Who will prove this, the secretary, the minister, minister of state? Are you going to prove it? Then there is another ‘asexual’ relationship that no one has yet defined,”

Uday Samanth, Higher and Technical Education Minister defended the government's decision by saying “This is not the first time such a law has been enacted in Maharashtra. Many states have enacted the law. Every element should have equal opportunity. Rather than exaggerating something, LGBTQ should be given greater opportunities. The bill has been introduced only after discussions with scholars from all over India,”

Criticisms Faced by Mungatiwar:

Sachin Sawant, the state Congress general secretary said "RSS-minded people, who want to take India to the darkness of regressive thoughts, won’t understand that there is no connection between intelligence and sexuality. Many scientists, thinkers and painters who brought about the most positive and progressive changes in the world belonged to LGBTQ”.

Sonam Kapoor, the Bollywood actor also criticised Mungantiwar's comment by posting the video of his comment shared by Yes, We Exist India on Instagram and writing "Ignorant, illiterate and hurtful."

Recently, in a landmark ruling that coincided with Pride Month, the Madras High Court  directed authorities to introduce necessary multi-level changes to curb prejudice and increase inclusivity for India’s queer community.

Justice Venkatesh said "I realised, after a one-on-one interaction with the Petitioners, that it was I (us), who has to set off on a journey of understanding them and accepting them and shed our notions, and not they who have to turn themselves inside out to suit our notions of social morality and tradition.”
