Journalist Arnab Goswami was arrested today, November 4, in a case of abetment to suicide from 2018. 53-year-old interior designer Anvay Naik had alleged non-payment of dues by Goswami and two others as the reason why he and his mother had to take such an extreme step. The reinvestigation of the same was reordered in May 2020 by Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh. As per Republic TV Goswami was ‘manhandled’ and ‘thrashed’ at the time of the arrest.
The news of the arrest has drawn some strong and differing reactions from notable women personalities on Twitter:
Smriti Z Irani
BJP leader and Union Minister Smriti Z Irani equated silence over Goswami’s arrest with support for fascism and suppression. Her tweet urged those in the “free press” to disregard their personal views on Goswami and challenge his arrest.
Those in the free press who don’t stand up today in support of Arnab, you are now tactically in support of fascism. You may not like him, you may not approve of him,you may despise his very existence but if you stay silent you support suppression. Who speaks if you are next ?— Smriti Z Irani (@smritiirani) November 4, 2020
Ranaut posted two tweets regarding Goswami’s arrest. In the first one, she referred to other political parties using names like “Pappupro”, “Penguins”, and “Sonia sena” as well as questioned their alleged ‘anger’. Voicing her support for Arnab Goswami, Kangana Ranaut wrote in her tweet, "Arnab sir let them pull your hair and assault you for the cause of free speech greats before us got hanged with smiles on their faces,Aazadi ka karz chukana hai."
Pappupro ko gussa kyun aata hai? Penguins ko gussa kyun aata hai? Ranaut’s second tweet included a short video wherein she questioned the Maharashtra government for arresting and assaulting Goswami. The video also drew similarities between Goswami’s arrest and a recent demolition of Ranaut’s office in Mumbai carried out by BMC.
Actress Payal Ghosh, too, tweeted in support of Goswami. She wrote, “We stand with You #ArnabGoswami.”

Comedian Saloni Gaur stated that she condemns Goswami’s arrest even though she doesn’t like his “bizarre style of reporting.” She went on to term the arrest as a “clear case of abuse of power to settle political scores.”
Though we don’t like #ArnabGoswami ‘s bizarre style of reporting but his arrest needs to be condemned.— Saloni Gaur (@salonayyy) November 4, 2020
This is clear case of abuse of power to settle political scores.
Bollywood actor-producer Sherlyn Chopra tweeted in support of Goswami - her “hero” and a “one in a million journalist.” She also stipulated that true journalism is the layer of protection between people and totalitarian rule.
Truth is treason in an empire of lies.— Sherni (@SherlynChopra) November 4, 2020
True journalism is the protection between people and any sort of totalitarian rule.
That's why my hero is a one in a million journalist, #ArnabGoswami #ArnabWeAreWithYou#FreeArnab #BharatwithArnabGoswami @republic @Republic_Bharat pic.twitter.com/Q98Ry9C2NI
Ruchira Chaturvedi, a prominent Congress member, highlighted the trauma of the complainant family. Additionally, she questioned the Bharatiya Janata Party leaders for “fooling” people by raising the issue of press freedom when Goswami has been arrested for abetment to suicide.
Just think of the trauma of the family forced to take this extreme step. #ArnabGoswami has been arrested for abetment to suicide. But BJP leaders are calling this an attack on press freedom etc. Who do they think they are fooling?! https://t.co/4yV9N8QoDk— Ruchira Chaturvedi (@RuchiraC) November 4, 2020
Chadha shared a news portal’s tweet detailing Goswami’s arrest and accompanied it with emojis expressing wide-eyed disbelief. Later, she followed this up with another tweet asking a follower for details of the specific case which led to Goswami’s arrest.
Sorry...what is this case that was reopened on 27th May? I am not aware. Can you share a link ? https://t.co/OjNsfJv4ty— TheRichaChadha (@RichaChadha) November 4, 2020
