Shrikant Tyagi, a political leader who was arrested by the Uttar Pradesh (UP) Police for assaulting and abusing a woman in Noida's Grand Omaxe society, said on Tuesday, 9 August, that the woman is like a sister to him and that a conspiracy was hatched to "politically decimate" him.

"I express my regret on the incident. She is like my sister, the incident is political and was done to politically decimate me," Tyagi said media while being taken to the court. His comments came after he was sent to 14-day judicial custody in the case.

The Noida Police had arrested him from UP's Meerut on Tuesday, a day after authorities razed parts of his residence. Three of his associates were also held.

Tyagi has reportedly been on the run since the video of him abusing a woman went viral. He was booked under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) section 352 (assault or use of criminal force on any woman, intending to outrage or knowing it to be likely that he will thereby outrage her modesty).

Initially, eight teams were constituted to apprehend him. But he could not be traced as he was changing his locations and mobile devices. A massive team effort was launched. The number of teams was increased to 12. He was continuously being chased, the police said.

Tyagi was constantly changing his locations and mobile devices. He went to Meerut, Muzaffarnagar, Haridwar and Rishikesh. After a massive search operation, Tyagi was arrested along with the people harbouring him during these 3-4 days.

Tyagi has reportedly been involved in a dispute with the housing society since 2019. The society administration claims that he encroached on the common area of the premises. The viral video showed Tyagi threatening, abusing and pushing a woman who was a resident of the housing society. According to reports, the woman had asked Tyagi to remove the palm tree he had planted in the park.

The woman claimed that the politician threatened her with dire consequences if she touched the palm tree he planted in the park.

Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police Ranvijay Singh said the police responded immediately after the viral video came to light. Singh said that the police impounded three of his vehicles that violated the Motor Vehicle Act. He mentioned that Tyagi’s third vehicle had the official symbol of the Uttar Pradesh government on it in violation of the rules.

While absconding, Tyagi spoke with Press Trust of India over the phone and claimed the allegations against him were incorrect and claimed that the woman was drunk and misbehaved with him and his family. Tyagi said that he “said a few things in rage” in response.

Tyagi said, “Her allegations that I have encroached on society’s common area are incorrect. I had paid extra money for the garden area when I bought the group floor apartment.”

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Monday also sought a report regarding the assault case. The CM also called for a thorough probe into the matter and asserted that stern action will be taken against Tyagi.

It is unimaginable the lengths men can go to suppress damage control. I, for one, can't decide whether Tyagi's statement was intended to shock or entertain us, though it is almost confusing if left to interpretation.

This isn't the first time a politician has made a foot-in-the-mouth statement. Sexist, misogynist and insensitive statements go hand in hand with some politicians in our country. However, bizarre statements like this one serve nothing but leave us pondering on the callous treatment.
