Bollywood critics and general viewers, however, are upset that the movie is a remake of the 2017 Telugu hit Middle Class Abbayi which starred Sai Pallavi, Bhumika Chawla and Nani in leading roles. The Hindi remake has been directed by Heroptani, Baaghi fame Sabbir Khan and stars Shilpa Shetty and Shirley Setia along with Abhimanyu.

“Nikamma trailer didn't seem any special or made any sense to me. Wondering how and why ShilpaShetty signed for such films,” said journalist and environmental activist, Jyothi Jha in a tweet. “I hope I am proved wrong & the story turns out to be great, but it's very unlikely. Theatrical release might not be a wise idea. Best wishes anyway,” she added further in her tweet.

Entertainment editor, Sreeju Sudhakaran also said in a tweet, “Another day, another remake, sigh…” Expressing disappointment in Bollywood, the tweet further added, “After Jersey, Bollywood found another Nani film to love and adapt in Middle Class  Abbayi, going by Nikamma's first trailer.”

Another user also questioned Bollywood in a tweet. “Seriously? Bollywood now remaking below average south indian movies too? This shows how lazy and over-dependent they’ve become. Nani starrer Middle Class Abbayi is a below average movie and Bollywood didn’t leave that too but remade it in the name of Nikamma and will be releasing it in theaters!”
