Delhi police have made 11 arrests in the Shahdara sexual assault case, reports said Friday. Out of those apprehended, nine are women. The matter relates to a shocking incident that surfaced from the national capital wherein an alleged gangrape survivor was shamed, garlanded with slippers and paraded around her locality earlier this week. A video of the same went viral on social media.

Police investigating the case have said there will be more arrests.

The disturbing video shows a woman, her face blackened with ink and hair shaved off, being ushered by a crowd comprising several women around a neighbourhood while people jeer at her. 20 years old, as per reports, the woman being paraded was allegedly raped by a group of illegal liquor vendors and abducted from her house. Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) chief Swati Maliwal met the survivor following the incident calling for strict action against those accused. As per a release by DCW, local women were allegedly "instigating" men to continue raping her when they were committing the sexual assault.

ANI reports the woman survivor is married and the incident was brought to the police's notice by her husband, who was informed about it by their landlord. He was not present at the site when the woman was allegedly being assaulted and shamed.

Neighbours allegedly accused the survivor of being responsible for the death of a local boy who was in love with her and died by suicide last year, according to reports. Personal enmity is being cited in the case.

Police have registered a case under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), including rape, kidnapping, illegal confinement and criminal conspiracy.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal took cognisance of the case Thursday, tweeting, "This is very shameful. How did the criminals get so much courage? I urge the Union Home Minister and the Lieutenant Governor to instruct the police to take strict action, pay attention to the law and order situation."

As per Newslaundry, the viral video is dated January 26 and was shot shortly after the woman was allegedly gangraped. She told the media channel that the accused "put their private parts on her mouth" in front of local women.

The survivor is being given protection and counselling. Her medical examinations have been completed.
