Sanjay Raut's wife Varsha Raut has sought more time to appear before the Enforcement Directorate (ED) for questioning related to the PMC bank fraud case. On Sunday, she had been summoned by the ED that investigates financial crimes. This lead to a war of words between Maharashtra's ruling party Shiv Sena and ally-turned-adversary party BJP.

Raut alleged BJP leaders have a list of 22 MLAs of the Congress and the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) "who will be made to resign under the pressure of the central investigating agencies".

As reported by ANI, Varsha Raut will not appear before ED and she has sought time till January 5, 2020.

Varsha Raut had skipped the two earlier summons citing health issues. She had been asked to meet the officials at the Mumbai office of the Enforcement Directorate which is probing financial transactions between her and Pravin Raut, who is already under arrest in the case.

This case came to light last September when several irregularities emerged in some loan accounts of the Punjab and Maharashtra Co-operative (PMC) Bank. This prompted (RBI) Reserve Bank of India to take control of the bank and cap withdrawals.

The Shiv Sena leader said that since last month, he had been in regular touch with the concerned department about a ₹ 50 lakh loan his wife, Varsha Raut took 10 years ago from a friend to buy a house. He added that all the details about the loan have already been given to the ED.

He also commented that, "We are middle-class people. My wife had taken a loan from a friend 10 years ago to purchase a house. Details have been given to the Income Tax (Department) and also mentioned in my Raya Sabha affidavit. The ED woke up to this deal after 10 years."
