Several senior Indian cricketers came out in support of him, including Irfan Pathan, Virender Sehwag, Sachin Tendulkar and VVS Laxman.

Current captain Virat Kohli, who later defended Shami at a press conference saying, "Attacking someone over their religion is the most pathetic thing that a human being can do," was brutally abused as well.
