Journalists Samriddhi Sakunia and Swarna Jha Granted Bail By Gomti District Court

Samriddhi Sakunia and Swarna Jha the two journalists of HW News who were arrested on purported charges of false reporting and disrupting communal harmony have been granted bail by a court in Gomti District in Tripura.

The bail was granted by the Chief Judicial Magistrate of the Gomti district after one hour of the court hearing, reported HW News.

The journalists Sakunia and Jha were arrested on November 15 on the basis of a first-person report that was filed against them on November 14. This report was filed against them by a VHP supporter at the Kumarghat Police Station in Tripura.

The two journalists were reporting on the incidents of vandalism and attacks on mosques in Tripura in connection to the violence in the state from October. Sakunia has 11.6K followers on her Instagram.

At first, the journalists were allowed to leave Tripura and then they were detained by the Assam Police and brought back to the state and arrested. Samriddhi Sakunia had tweeted, "We have been detained at the Nilambazar police station, Karimganj, Assam. We were informed by the officer-in-charge of Nilambazar PS that the SP of Gomti District gave the orders for our detention."

According to the statement by HW news, the duo was detained by the Assam Police while they were on their way to Silchar, which is 296.6 kilometres away from Gomati District. The tweet by HW news read that the two journalists were arrested on Monday afternoon from a shelter house in Karimganj in Assam. A press release issued by the office of Tripura police chief VS Yadav claimed that the posts by Sakunia were not true and promoted a sense of hatred between communities.
