In the Zila panchayat chairperson election, BJP won 67 seats and the other 75 seats were at stake. Akhilesh Yadav's Samajwadi Party won 5 seats to its name. One seat each went to Rashtriya Lok Dal, Jansatta Dal and an independent candidate. Bahujan Samaj led by Mayawati did not contest in the elections. In comparison to the 2016 elections of Zila Panchayat, CM Yogi Adityanath won 60 out of the 75 seats in the state.

Saina Nehwal joined BJP in January 2020. She tweeted on her social media and wrote, "Hearty congratulations for thumping victory in Zila Panchayat Chairperson election in UP @myogiadityanath sir."

This tweet by Nehwal is stirring controversy and netizens are giving mixed reactions to the athlete. Politicians from opposition parties also replied to her tweet. Jayant Chaudhary, the President of Rashtriya Lokdal, replied to Saina Nehwal and called her a "sarkari shuttler". The tweet read, "I think voters need to play a subtle drop shot on celebs trying to influence their decisions!"

Dr J Aslam Basha, the Chairman minority department of Tamil Nadu Congress asked the Badminton player when she would stop playing. He also said that secularism has caused a division between Nehwal's fans.

PM Modi also congratulated CM Yogi Adityanath and wrote, "The glorious victory of BJP in the UP District Panchayat elections is the blessing given by the people for development, public service and rule of law. The credit for this goes to the policies of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and the tireless hard work of the party workers."

Nehwal has been honoured with the country's top sporting awards like the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna and Arjuna Award. She was also awarded the Padma Bhushan in the year 2016. And she has 24 international titles to her name.
