Women in our country, especially the ones living in the northern part of India, feel unsafe to step out of the house at all times during the day. Despite all claims of working towards the issue, the government and the police have made little difference to the situation. The police Commissioner of Delhi in a report said that the sudden increase in the number of cases means that such incidents don’t go unreported. However, if it was just the ‘confidence’ that made women report these cases and if the situation had in fact, improved, then a woman wouldn’t have been raped in a car on the road in the capital.

India’s 4th ranking female badminton player agrees. Saina Nehwal said, "I feel bad and hurt. It scares me to move out of home even in the day. Such incidents need to be stopped.” Talking about women in countries like Singapore and Malaysia, she added, “Girls and women in these countries can easily move out in the night without feeling unsafe as there are no such issues like in India. I hope government will come up with strict measures to stop these crimes”." according to a report by Vishwa Gujarat.

Nehwal added, “Being a player I need to wear comfortable clothes. Girls like to wear fashionable clothes. I see no problem in that”, in response to all those who believe that women who wear ‘indecent clothes’ are to be blamed for such incidents.

Last year in April, when the player was in the capital for a tournament she said that she would not feel safe stepping on the streets after her match: "After what I am hearing (of the rapes), it is really very scaring. I will think twice (about walking alone in Delhi). This can happen to me as well. It is very unfortunate. Delhi is a beautiful city but such incidents have truly tarnished its image," according to NDTV Sports.
