Indian Origin Woman Murdered In Student Flat At London, One Arrested: Report

A 19-year-old Indian origin, British national Sabita Thanwani was found with serious neck injuries at the student flat in the Clerkenwell area of London, the United Kingdom. After a search by the police, Scotland Yard arrested a Tunisian national under the suspicion of alleged murder and assault.

On Saturday, the deceased woman was found at Arbour House student flats in the area with serious neck injuries. After finding her body, the Metropolitan police issued an urgent appeal for the 22-year-old Maher Maaroufe. According to the police, the two were in a relationship.

On Sunday, the suspect was arrested around the same area where the deceased woman's body was discovered. The Detective Chief Inspector of the Met Police Specialist Crime unit Linda Bradley is leading the case.

"I would like to thank everyone for publicising and sharing our appeal to trace Maaroufe," said Bradley, while adding that the deceased woman's family has been updated about the detention and are being supported by 'specially trained officers'."

While sharing condolences with the family, Bradley requested people to respect the family's privacy "at this indescribable devastating time for them as they come to terms with Sabita's murder."

The Met police were to conduct a special post-mortem examination, before which they had informed the family of the deceased. They said that formal identification is still pending.

Sharing more information on the case and the detained suspect, Bradley said that the suspect and the deceased were in a relationship although the suspect was not a student. "He is a Tunisian national of no fixed address," said Bradley while making a public appearance in the case.

The spokesperson for Unite Students, which operates from the Arbour House students accommodation has declined to comment on the case as the investigation is still on. But the spokesperson said that it is their priority to ensure the safety and wellbeing of students there and that they are working closely with the police in connection with the case.
