A controversial difference of opinion between the opposition lawmakers and the Maharashtra government is garnering attention regarding the inclusion of rubber penis models in the family planning kits. The kits will reportedly be used by ASHA workers to spread awareness among the rural and urban public regarding family management and birth control. The opposition considers it embarrassing for ASHA workers to spread awareness about reproductive health while displaying the penis models as a reference, especially in rural areas.

Rubber Penis In Family Planning Kit In Maharashtra: Awareness Or Embarrassment?

Maharashtra's public health department's director, Dr. Archana Patil, released a statement stating the number of family planning kits that have been distributed till now. Reportedly, around 25,000 such kits with rubber penis models have been sent out to ASHA workers to be used for the reproductive health awareness programme around the state. Dr. Patil added that the only district that has shown a negative reaction to the kit is Buldhana while there were no complaints from other areas.

The family planning kits also include a rubber uterus model. However, the uterus model has not sparked any controversy as of now. The ASHA workers in Buldhana reportedly felt embarrassed about displaying the human genital models around to the common public, especially in rural areas where people are already quite hesitant to talk on the topic of reproductive and sexual health. However, they also acknowledged the fact that it is a part of their job.

In some people's opinion the inclusion of rubber penis and uterus models will definitely facilitate better understanding of the concepts of reproductive health and family planning. Others have also pointed out that it is important that the ASHA workers feel comfortable working with them.
