Rewari Gangrape: Six minor boys, aged between 10 and 12, and one 18-year-old were among the accused booked in connection with the alleged gangrape of a 10-year-old girl in Rewari, Haryana.

So far, six of the boys including the 18-year-old one have been taken into custody. One accomplice, also a minor, is absconding. The police have said three of the accused are from the survivor’s extended family.

According to a report by the Times of India, on May 24, a group of children playing together at a ground in an adjoining school building, including the girl, in Rewari disappeared. The minor girl was allegedly raped, a crime that came to light only this week after a video of the incident, allegedly shot and shared by one or more of the boys, circled back to the area and reached a neighbour, who alerted the girl’s family.

Here are ten things to know about the Rewari Gangrape case:

1. A 10-year-old girl was playing in a village school in Haryana's Rewari district when the seven accused abducted her on May 24 and allegedly raped her. They also made a video of the alleged crime on their mobile phones, police said on Wednesday.

2. One of the accused is an adult and the others are not even in their teens.

3. Police said the minors were taken to the Juvenile Justice Board and sent to a correction home while the 18-year-old was produced before the court and sent to the district jail. Police are looking for the others who are seen in the video and also collecting details of those who shared the video.

4. The cops said the minor's father filed a police complaint after the video of the alleged crime circulated locally.

5. Subsequently, an FIR was registered on Wednesday and the case was filed at the women’s police station under sections 376D (gang rape), 354C (voyeurism) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the IPC, sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, the Information Technology Act and the Scheduled Castes/Scheduled Tribes Act against all seven accused.

6. The accused have been apprehended and the hunt is on to arrest the seventh accused, said DSP (HQ) Rewari. He added neighbours identified the boys after seeing the video. Police have also come to know that the boys and the child live in the same neighbourhood.

7. The girl’s family and the accused boys live in a Rewari village and know each other, said the DSP.

8. According to the Police, the school was closed due to the summer holidays and the pandemic, however, children, including the girl, were playing there when the incident took place on May 24.

9. On Tuesday (June 8), one of the neighbours found the video on a phone and informed the girl’s father.

10. Police said they had taken the child for a medical examination, which confirmed she was sexually assaulted.
