Rape Undertrials Torture Viral Video: Some prisoners in Goa jail were allegedly stripping three men accused of gang rape. They also made them do sit-ups. The video of the same has gone viral on social media platforms. Following this, authorities have ordered an inquiry into this.

Venâncio Furtado, Inspector general (prisons), has condemned the incident, as per sources. He said that he is waiting for he findings of the inquiry post which he will be taking the required action. “I have asked the jail superintendent to submit the inquiry report within 24 hours. If other inmates are involved, we will take action as per the prison rules. We will also check whether Sections of the IPC (Indian Penal Code) are applicable, and we will accordingly take action. A message needs to go that such incidents will not be tolerated,” Furtado said adding that action will be taken against the jail stuff also if they are found to be guilty.

The three men had allegedly raped two teenaged girls at a beach in late July. There is a fourth one as well but he tested positive for COVID-19. He has been kept in a separate block due to the same.

He also said that he would inquire if what happened with the three men was a regular ritual and if the torture happens with all the freshers.

It is the same case in which Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant received flak for blaming girls for stepping out late at night.

“They were on the beach the whole night, two boys and two girls,” he said. “Teens, particularly minors, should not be spending the nights on beaches… When 14-year-olds stay on the beach the whole night, the parents need to introspect.” He, however, later said that his statement was misunderstood and he didn't intend to shame the victim. He was trying to say that safety of minors is a shared responsibility. Read more about the case here.
