Denmark’s Queen Margrethe II announced that she stripped four of her grandchildren of their titles. The palace announced that the official reason was to allow the four children of her youngest son, Prince Joachim to live more normal lives.

The Denmark royal palace said in a statement, “As of January 1, 2021, the descendants of His Royal Highness Prince Joachim will only be able to use their titles as Count and Countess of Monpezat, their previous titles of Prince and Princess of Denmark ceasing to exist.”

The palace said in the statement that the Queen of Denmark wished to “create a framework” for her grandchildren that would allow them to “shape their own existence without being limited by the special considerations and obligations that a formal affiliation with the Royal house as an institution implies”.

53-year-old Prince Joachim has four children from two marriages Nikolai, Felix, Henrik and Athena, ranging from ages 23 to 10.

However, Countess Alexandra, the mother of Prince Joachim’s two eldest sons the Danish media that she was shocked by the decision. She said, “The children feel excluded. They can’t understand why their identity is being taken from them.”

Reportedly, the eldest grandchild Prince Nikolai said that he and his family were “very sad” with the monarch’s decision to strip their titles. He said, “We are, as my parents have also stated, in shock at this decision and at how quickly it has actually gone”.

Prince Nikolai added, “I am very confused as to why it has to happen like this.”

The Queen of Denmark, Margrethe II defended that decision and said, “It is a consideration I have had for quite a long time and I think it will be good for them in their future”.
