In recent news, pro-MMA fighter and strawweight champion Puja Tomar will be the first Indian woman to have signed a contract with the UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship) on October 16. The 28-year-old sportswoman confirmed the news in an Instagram post on October 17.
In her Instagram post, Tomar puts the spotlight on her country and on Indian MMA champions, writing that she is the first of many to follow.
Who is Puja Tomar?
Puja Tomar is a "five-time national wushu champion" who has represented India internationally in the sport on many occasions. At the age of 28, Tomar has collected 4 consecutive victories during her time at the MFN (Matrix Fight Night), which she joined in 2021. According to Sportstar, Puja won the "MFN strawweight title in November 2022, beating her former ONE opponent Bi Nguyen at MFN 10."
UFC Contract
As the first Indian woman to sign a contract with the UFC, Puja will be joining Anshul Jubli, the first male Indian martial arts athlete as the first of many Indian athletes and martial arts fighters to sign contracts with the UFC. The reaction to Tomar's UFC contract has been largely positive on social media.
