Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi is on a three-day visit to Uttar Pradesh, she arrived in Lucknow on Friday, July 16. The leader is presently on a silent protest (Maun Vrat) in front of the Gandhi statue in Lucknow as an attempt to condemn the government for allegedly manhandling women and mismanaging the state functions during the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Priyanka Gandhi attacked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath after there were reports of violence from several districts in Uttar Pradesh. Allegedly, opposition candidates were stopped by the administration during the filing of nomination papers for the block Pramukh elections on Thursday.

"PM Saheb and Chief Minister Saheb should applaud their workers in Uttar Pradesh for firing, bombing, stone pelting, looting nomination documents, and thrashing journalists and women. In Uttar Pradesh, law and order have been blindfolded, while democracy has been ripped off," Gandhi stated in a tweet.

The Congress leader condemned Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday for praising the Uttar Pradesh government's handling of the COVID-19 crisis, saying his "certificate" couldn't hide the reality of Yogi Adityanath's alleged "cruelty, negligence, and mismanagement" during the second wave of the coronavirus.

There were reports of several cases of violence against opposition leaders from UP. Mata Prasad Pandey, the former Uttar Pradesh Assembly Speaker, was assaulted in Siddharthnagar, as per a report by National Herald.

When Independent candidate Munni Devi arrived in Sitapur to register her nomination in Kamlapur, three people were reportedly shot. She was blocked from entering as unidentified individuals opened fire in the presence of the police.

Gandhi also posted a video clip on her Twitter account of people misbehaving with a woman who was trying to file her nominations.

"When a rape victim spoke out against a BJP MLA a few years ago, she was targeted for murder along with her entire family. The BJP went to extremes today to prevent a woman from being nominated. Same government. Same behaviour, " Priyanka Gandhi stated in a tweet.
