Priyanka Chopra has apologised for modelling an ‘insensitive’ T-shirt on Conde Nast Traveller magazine’s cover. The actress was featured on the magazine’s October cover wearing a white T-shirt with the words REFUGEE, IMMIGRANT, OUTSIDER crossed out, leaving only the word TRAVELLER.
The cover and Priyanka Chopra received a lot of criticism for their insensitivity to refugees. Chopra apologised in an interview to NDTV yesterday.
How did @CNTIndia think this was appropriate? I need an explainer & @meanestindian's alt cover says it all: offensive. Wrong on all levels. https://t.co/QBvR7Xx0Xj

@CNTIndia @priyankachopra extremely insensitive in midst of biggest #refugeecrises. All other options listed are forced on people not chosen

“I am really, really apologetic about the fact that so many sentiments were hurt…Of all people, I’m someone who always stands for no labels. I’m someone who stands for people being able to do what they have to do, when they have to do it, without being put in a box,”
“They [Condé Nast] specially got this [T-shirt] made and implored me to wear it. They said they were addressing xenophobia which is a big issue that is happening,” Chopra told NDTV. “The point the magazine wanted to make was actually something good,” she added.
Conde Nast also issued a statement in which it said that it was trying to challenge stereotypes and portray how the labelling of people as outsiders is creating a culture of xenophobia.
“We believe that the opening up of borders and the breaking down of walls can help us discover the world, and open up our minds and hearts. So, when we had actor Priyanka Chopra wear a T-shirt we created on the cover of the 6th anniversary issue, we had a point to make,” it said.
