'Big Achievement,' President Murmu Hails Women Enrollment Ratio At KU

President Droupadi Murmu addressed the students of Kashmir University at its 20th convocation ceremony taking cognizance of the number of women students enrolled.

President Droupadi Murmu encouraged Kashmir University and its students to sustainable development, asking them to protect the Himalayan ecosystem, appreciating the rising number of women students enrolling in the university and achieving awards, and opined it to be the pathway towards the country's bright future.

President highlighted more than 55% of students enrolled in the university are women, and around 65% of women achieve awards for their excellence in academics.

President Murmu's Address

On October 11, President Droupadi Murmu visited Kashmir University at its 20th convocation ceremony and praised the university for having 55% women enrollment. She said that this is a remarkable achievement and that it is important to encourage more girls to pursue higher education.

The President highlighted the fact that 55% of students enrolled in Kashmir University are women and noticed more than 2/3rd of students receiving prizes for academic excellence were women. Furthermore, she expressed her confidence in women and girls holding the potential to play a bigger role in the leadership of the country highlighting the Nari Shakti Vandan Act 2023 to be a revolutionising step towards a female-led country. 

Referring to the University's motto, ‘Let us move from darkness to light’ President Murmu underlined the importance of youth choosing the path of education and peace that could act as a catalyst between social transformation and the country's progress towards a brighter future.

President Murmu also urged the students and faculties of the university to actively engage in social services contiguous to their academic pursuits. She emphasised students to promote sustainable development highlighting how it is deeply rooted in the rich culture of Kashmir's heritage and commended the University's efforts in glaciology, and biodiversity conservation. 

President also highlighted the hydraulic engineering work carried out in the valley some 1200 years ago by an expert named Suyya to protect the city of Srinagar from the Jhelum floods and gave many such historical examples to motivate students and faculties. 

The President's visit is also a sign that the government of India is committed to the development of Kashmir. It is important for the government to continue to invest in education in Kashmir, as it is one of the most important ways to improve the lives of people in the region.
