Police shot one of the Assam rape and murder case accused on June 16 after he allegedly tried to escape when he was taken to a forest for locating a hidden phone of another accused of raping and murdering two minor cousin sisters on June 12. It has been reported that the injured accused was admitted to a local hospital immediately.

The Assam rape and murder case that grabbed national attention because of its gruesomeness found its way back to headlines on Thursday after the investigating police shot one of the seven accused late at night on the mentioned day.

Reportedly, the accused, identified as Farijul Rahman was taken to a forest where he had claimed to have hidden a mobile phone of another accused who was arrested in connection with the same case.

Kokrajhar Superintendent of Police Prateek Vijay Kumar said, "The police had taken him to the area for a search operation to retrieve the phone."

However, in reality, the accused had allegedly hidden a sharp weapon at the spot where he claimed to have hidden the phone. Once the police reached the spot along with the accused, he attempted to cut the rope he was tied to after reaching out to the weapon, the police claimed.

The police, in return, reportedly fired two rounds of bullets out of which one hit the right leg of the target, an official said, it also caused an injury of another constable during the commotion.

Rahman was admitted to Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed Medical College and Hospital in Barpeta with injuries. However, no risk in life has been reported.

Two cousins, who were underage, were allegedly raped and hanged from a tree in a remote village in the Kokrajhar district of Assam on June 12. The bodies of the victim were sent for post-mortem examination for further inquiry.

Along with the possibilities of murder and rape, the police are also considering the possibility of suicide. However, the family of both the girls strongly contested that and alleged that the girls were murdered after being raped.

The case grabbed major attention after Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma showed his eagerness in the case and himself asked the police to track the case faster.
