Off to the Tokyo International Film Festival: Lipstick Under My Burkha

Even as Pink continues to garner rave reviews, here is another woman-centric film that is now in the news. Lipstick Under My Burkha,starring Konkona Sen Sharma, Ratna Pathak Shah, Aahana Kumra and Plabita Borthakur, which deals with four women from small town and their quest for freedom, is all set to be screened for the first time at the 29th Tokyo International Film Festival. Produced by noted filmmaker Prakash Jha and directed by Alankrita Srivastava, the  film is a part of a competition under the category of Future of Asian Cinema section beginning from October 25 to November 3, as reported by TOI.

The male leads are no less either with Sushant Singh, Vikrant Massey and Shashank Arora.

Srivastava, who is directing her second feature after' Turning 30',  believes that the paradigm is shifting in the lives of small town women. “The landscape of small town India is rapidly changing, and women are finding the courage to think about what they truly want. Their secret dreams and veiled desires - just on the verge of breaking out. It is this point of transition that Lipstick Under My Burkha explores. Though locally rooted, it is a story with universal resonance. And I am delighted to begin the film's journey at the esteemed Tokyo International Film Festival," said Srivastav, as reported by TOI.

The leading ladies Sharma and Shah are also very excited about the fact that the film is premiering at the international forum. While Konkana said, “It is truly an honour to have our film premiere at the Tokyo International Film Festival. I'm particularly excited because it is in a competitive section at such a prestigious festival,”, Shah added, “I am thrilled to be a part of this brave film that explores desire in the context of a changing India. And I am delighted that our film will premiere at the Tokyo IFF. It is wonderful news,” reported International Business Times.

Sushant Singh, Vikrant Massey and Shashank Arora make up the male star-cast of the film.
