However, the police was able to arrest him weeks before he could do so.

Odisha Man Marries 18 Women, Cons Them For Money And 'Pleasure'

Bibhu Prakash Swain was born in a small village in Odisha and got married for the first time in 1978 and had three children from his first wife, two of whom are doctors and the third a dentist. However, he got separated from his first family and moved to Bhubaneshwar. He was a trained lab technician but after moving, he started introducing himself as a doctor and got married for the second time in 2002.

Swain's targets were rich, successful and single/divorced/widowed women, usually lawyers, medics, paramilitary officers or professors, in their 40s. The man targeted them through websites where he forged as a 51 years old doctor or professor. In order to persuade them and make them believe in his lies, he used fake IDs and appointments letters and even told them he had a high salary.

More About the Case

He was arrested by a police team headed by senior officer Sanjiv Satpathy who gave details about the case. They started investigating the case in May 2021 when they received a complaint from a 48-year-old woman whom Swain married. She somehow got to know that he was married to seven women other than her after which she secretly extracted the contacts of his other wives and talked to them individually. The police came to know that Swain had been involved in conning women for very long, after which they started observing and extracting more information about him.

The police got to know that he first used to marry the woman, spend some time and eventually ask for money from her for an emergency. Once he got the money, he moved to his next target, leaving her behind with the belief that widowed or divorced women who got remarried would not approach the police in fear of societal judgement.

The police retrieved his phone records that showed that he saved the phone number of his 18 wives by the name of their cities like "Madam Assam" and "Madam Delhi". They also got to know that he is involved in around Rs 1 Crore fraud from 13 banks with around 128 forged credit cards. He allegedly operated a chain of labs where the staff and doctors were not paid for months. The police are reportedly suspecting that he was helped by others in such an elaborate conning plan and is investigating the case in detail.
