A massive 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck central Myanmar on Friday, March 28, causing widespread destruction and loss of life. The tremors were felt in Thailand, China, India, Vietnam, and Bangladesh, shaking buildings and roads. As rescue efforts continue, the death toll has risen to 3,000, according to Reuters report.
Amid the devastation, a heartwarming video from a Chinese hospital near Myanmar’s border is capturing attention online. The CCTV footage from a maternity unit in Ruili, Yunnan, shows two nurses risking their lives to protect newborns as the tremors shook the hospital violently.
Watch: Nurses Protect Newborns as Myanmar Quake Shakes China
In the video, one nurse is seen kneeling to shield an infant, while another holds onto cribs to prevent them from rolling away. As the shaking intensified, cots with sleeping babies began moving uncontrollably. The nurses held onto the infants, ensuring they remained safe. Despite water spilling onto the floor from a shaken filter, making it difficult to stand, they continued to protect the newborns. Thankfully, all the nurses and babies escaped unharmed.
The clip has gone viral, with many praising the nurses' quick thinking and bravery. The Daily Mail shared the footage, calling it "a great example of humanity and professionalism."
Widespread Destruction and Rescue Efforts
Myanmar continues to grapple with the aftermath of a powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake, which has worsened the country's ongoing crisis. The quake, which struck on March 28, has been followed by five aftershocks, further deepening the devastation.
The disaster comes at a time when Myanmar is already struggling under military rule. The nation, home to 53 million people, has faced economic turmoil and political instability since the 2021 coup, which reversed a decade of progress and democracy. The earthquake has only added to the hardships faced by its citizens.
Julia Rees from UNICEF reportedly described the situation as catastrophic, saying she had seen entire communities flattened. "This crisis is still unfolding. The tremors are continuing. Search and rescue operations are ongoing. Bodies are still being pulled from the rubble," Rees stated, emphasising the ongoing nature of the disaster. As rescue teams work tirelessly, the scale of the disaster continues to grow. Rees reportedly warned that the response time is critical, stating, "Let me be clear, the needs are massive, and they are rising by the hour. The window for life-saving response is closing."
With the situation evolving rapidly, aid organisations and rescue teams are racing against time to provide assistance to those affected.
